Once Krishna became curious to know how much Radha loves Him. So, disguising Himself as a woman from heaven, Krishna met Srimati Radharani. After talking together for a long time Radharani said, “I will tell you about My love of Shyam.”
Vrsabhanunandini Radha said, “Anyone who thinks they know the nature or qualities of Krishna prema, they know nothing! The purity of prema is seen in the lover’s actions which are done only to please the beloved. Prema appears fresh and inebriating at every moment.
“In union prema delights like cooling moonbeams, and in separation prema burns like scorching sunshine. Other than Krishna, where in this universe can such prema be found? The Vraja-gopis’ prema gives Krishna unlimited bliss. At times it appears like lust, but it is not because the gopis are only interested in Krishna’s happiness.
“It is only the love of the gopis, who are only interested in Krishna’s happiness, that gives Krishna unlimited bliss. Vrajendranandana is an ocean of love, a jewel mine of good qualities and He is most attractive to the gopis. Although Krishna shows symptoms of lust like deceitfulness, naughtiness and crookedness, it is actually prema. It is the Vraja-gopis’ causeless love for Krishna that subdues Him. I have personally experienced that!
“Of all the gopis Krishna is most attracted to Me. Krishna considers My love to be as great as Mount Meru, and the love of the other gopis to be like three or four mustard seeds.
“If Krishna does not show up at the trysting place, then Krishna must have met with some obstacle. Even though Krishna’s mind is fixed on Me, He may feel obliged sometimes to enjoy with some other gopi, being stopped by her on the way. Krishna however, will not feel happy with her, but will instead burn in a fire of misery, thinking of how much I suffer that night without Him.
“And that makes Me again very sad, since My dressing, ornamentation and loving expertise were all wasted because they could not make Krishna happy. This makes Me cry. When Krishna humbly arrives in the morning, I will angrily tell Krishna, ‘Go back and enjoy with that other girl!’ But that is also all for Krishna’s pleasure. This is the way of love in Vraja.”
After eagerly hearing Radhika’s description of pure love, Krishna, disguised as a woman, said, “I understand that You are the only vessel of the prema You have described.
“O Radha! The essence of Your ambrosial talkis that prema makes the lover’s faults look like virtues; it makes the misery the lover gives the beloved taste like nectar; it makes one unable to tolerate even the slightest misery that the lover may feel; it makes one unable to give up one’s body and it makes the lover appear glorious, although he may not be glorious at all. That is prema! O Radhe, and You are the only shelter of that prema!”
Sri Radhika said, “I know exactly and immediately what is on My lover’s mind. People think that Krishna and I eternally dwell in each other. Actually, we are one soul full of deep rasas like two lotus flowers, one blue one golden, growing from a single stem.”
After hearing Radha’s wonderful talk on love Hari gave up His female disguise, and began to kiss and embrace Sri Radhika again and again. (Prema Samputa, Visvanatha Cakravartipada)
