Love means surrender, pleasing and serving one’s beloved Gurudeva without any selfish independent desire.
Loyalty is expressed according to one’s degree of surrender: “I will do whatever is needed to please my master.” Spiritual loyalty is a divine feeling and mentality wherein one decides to stay with and follow one’s guru eternally.
Loyalty in a relationship demands commitment. Being a loyal shishya means being consciously committed to making your relationship with Sri Guru spiritually successful. Always support your Gurudeva, be honest and heartfelt in speaking with Gurudeva, openly express your hopes and aspirations, continually practice gratitude, be determined in your sadhana, and practice forgiveness.
Loyalty is expressed in living, personal qualities. Because of love and attachment to Gurudeva, one never forgets him and one does things that help one remember Gurudeva like worship and look at his photos, read his books, hear and see his lectures, and remember one’s personal times with Sri Guru.
Loyalty also means that we feel a great distaste and guilt if, in any context, we find ourselves accepting someone else as our guru.
True loyalty means one always remembers Sri Guru’s teachings and behavior and tries to live an honest life based on them. Loyalty means practicing the habits you have learned from Gurudeva— the wake up technique; the 555 club; read lila-stop-chant japa with lila smaran; daily study Bhagavata, Gita, lila books; prayer before medicine, japa and charanamrita; tulsi dirt (braja raja) on head; rotis to cows, dogs, monkeys; feed birds; love all, respect all, serve all; always be a student-teacher; and see many good examples of what not to do.
